Mannitol - Mechanism of action
Mannitol is a primary osmotic diuretic that remains in the extracellular space after intravenous administration and is rapidly removed by the kidneys. Approximately 80% of mannitol is excreted in the urine within 3 hours of administration, and only about 10% is subject to reflux resorption. Its action is to increase the osmotic pressure in extracellular fluids, leading to the movement of water from the interior of cells to the interstitial space and plasma. It also increases the excretion of sodium and chloride. This mechanism is responsible for lowering intracranial and intraocular pressure (as mannitol does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier or the eyeball). The 5,07% mannitol solution is isoosmotic to blood serum.

Mannitol is an organic compound that in medicine acts as a diuretic and helps to reduce intracranial and intraocular pressure. It is used in the treatment of patients with cerebral oedema, glaucoma and in cases of poisoning to remove excess fluid from the body.
Mannitol - Industrial applications
Mannitol, which is a sugar alcohol, is an organic chemical compound that occurs naturally in plants such as seaweed, but can also be produced synthetically. In its synthetic form, it is used as a food additive under the symbol E421. As well as imparting a sweet taste, mannitol is effective in binding moisture.
As a low-calorie sweetener, mannitol is a popular substitute for sugar in „light” products. It is considered a safe substance, but ingesting it in large quantities can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhoea and kidney problems. These symptoms occur after consuming around 25 grams of mannitol at one time, which is a large amount.
Mannitol is a good choice for diet and health-conscious people, but pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with diabetes should use it with caution.
